About the Navy Body Fat Method

The US Navy circumference method was developed as a practical way to estimate body fat without expensive equipment. It uses height, neck, waist (and hip for women) measurements to estimate body composition with ±3–4% accuracy.

  • Measure consistently — morning, before eating, after using the bathroom.
  • Take 3 measurements and use the average for best accuracy.
  • For the most precise results, use a DEXA scan or hydrostatic weighing.

Understanding Body Fat Percentage

Body fat percentage is more clinically meaningful than weight or BMI alone. Unlike BMI, which cannot distinguish muscle from fat, body fat percentage directly measures the proportion of your mass that is fat tissue — giving a clearer picture of metabolic health.

Walking at moderate intensity burns 50–65% of calories from fat. Research shows 12 weeks of consistent 30-minute daily walking reduces body fat percentage by 1–3% in overweight individuals, even without dietary changes.
